Bjorn Baker targets Warwick Farm with lightly raced Ellipsis
Wednesday's Warwick Farm race meeting: tips and previews
In partnership with Racing NSW.. There's consistency in her race record but the Bjorn Baker stable is hoping lightly raced mare Ellipsis can have the sort of campaign that will allow her to climb through the grades.. On the back of a pleasing first-up run, the five-year-old tackles the All Too Hard @ Vinery Stud Handicap (1100m) at Warwick Farm on Wednesday..
Baker's racing manager Luke Hilton said the job for Ellipsis is to maintain a preparation because her career to date has been a little stop start and restricted to just 10 starts with fourth her worst result.. "We just want to get some consistency into her, she's had her challenges,'' he said.. "We want to see her have an extended preparation and get an opportunity but she's always shown good ability." Ellipsis had a nine month gap between runs going into her third placing behind Fierce at Rosehill earlier this month..
Hilton said they elected to ride her conservatively from a wide barrier in that 1100m event but barrier two, with a run under her belt, is something she and jockey Dylan Gibbons can make use of.. "She was fantastic first-up, we were really pleased, without a whole lot of luck,'' he said.. "She has improvement, back to Wednesday grade, a good gate, it's the right race..
"She has good natural speed, it's a lovely gate and that means Dylan's got options." Stallone returns to city company after a confidence boosting Hawkesbury win a couple of weeks ago and Hilton said he has the chance to build on it in the Ranvet Handicap (1400m).. The gelding reacted to the shades going on and led all the way under 61kg, he drops 5kg on that win.. "He was fantastic back in grade with blinkers on, it's made a big difference,'' Hilton said..
"Hopefully he can go on with it and get a city win on the board because he's been consistent." The Baker stable is weighing up whether Chilli Margs takes on the short priced favourite Love Story in the Toyota Forklifts Handicap (1400m) or is saved for Randwick this weekend.. Chilli Margs ran into third at Rosehill two weeks ago when resuming and Hilton said she has the gate speed to use her draw directly outside the favourite if they elect to go around.. "She's been going well at home..
The race worked against her the way the track played the other day,'' he said.. "She steps up in distance, she'll improve again off it.. It's tricky with the favourite and an awkward gate but she is building nicely and may be looking for a peak third-up." Meanwhile, Within The Law topped off her preparation for the Group 1 $10 million Asahi Super Dry Golden Eagle (1500m) with a final piece of work on Tuesday morning..
She hasn't won since her two-year-old season but has been Group 1 placed twice and was beaten under a length first-up in the Silver Eagle behind a number of her rivals this weekend.. "She's always good first-up, I think she's better when she's fresher in her campaigns,'' he said.. "She competed with the ones that are pretty firm in the market the other day and was very good..
"Obviously it's not an easy race, but Bjorn's doing something a bit different with her going to the 1500m second-up." Tips and race by race preview for Wednesday's Warwick Farm meeting.. Selections based on a good track.. Race 1 - 3:00PM ASAHI SUPER DRY PLATE (1400 METRES) 13..
The Roaring Sun has hit the line nicely in both starts, either side of a spell, at 1300m and since his first-up placing at Kembla he's been back to the trials.. Should relish the extra 100m and if he can get the breaks from a handy draw you'd expect him to take holding out.. Dangers:.
6.. Ligularia stuck to her guns well at her first run for almost a year when placed at Rosehill two weeks ago.. Not a lot made ground in that race and she was pretty good through the line..
Jumps quickly in trip but keep safe.. 11.. Nevada Falls was an eye-catcher on debut at the Rosehill meeting two weeks ago..
Not overly well served at the barrier draw but no doubt he'll improve on his first outing.. 12.. Quarterback hasn't raced for a month since chasing home Barracks and Affari at Rosehill over 1200m..
Big drifter on that occasion too.. Fitter for a recent trial, draws well and sure to be competitive.. How to play it:.
The Roaring Sun WIN.. Race 2 - 3:35PM YARRAMAN PARK STUD HANDICAP (2400 METRES) 5.. Savvy Spy is one of the up and comers of the field and steps to 2400m after quite a dominant win in lesser grade at Hawkesbury..
Ran a nice third at Rosehill prior to that in a good form race, gets down in the weights again and not surprised he's the early favourite.. Go well.. Dangers:.
4.. Criteria measured up to this sort of race on the back of a provincial win when a solid third at 2400m at Rosehill.. Similar opposition, slightly better set up and better for the run at the trip..
In the mix.. 3.. Andron was the winner of that race, he led all or most of the way and it was a strong effort considering he was jumping 600m in trip..
No reason he couldn't repeat the dose or at least take some catching.. 2.. Nkosi was strongly supported in the same event and proved a little disappointing as he was beaten a couple of lengths..
Also up quickly in trip there so perhaps he's worth another chance.. How to play it:. Savvy Spy WIN..
Race 3 - 4:10PM RANVET HANDICAP (1400 METRES) 3.. Verbil backs up after a promising second behind Amreekiyah over the same track and distance last week.. Winner just a bit too slick but also had full steam down the outside..
Did start favourite two runs back in a similar race and gets every chance to convert.. Dangers:. 5..
Komodo Dragon led all the way to a comfortable win at Kensington about seven weeks ago then sent north and disappointed running fourth in a Class 3 at Eagle Farm.. Looked to have his chance, perhaps the inside wasn't the place to be.. If you forgive that he'll take beating..
2.. Felix Majestic has turned into Mr Reliable of late with a string of placings and with his on pace racing style will give a sight once again.. The form around him is good and he's thereabouts again..
8.. Stallone found his form with the blinkers on leading all the way at Hawkesbury a couple of weeks ago.. Skips a couple of grades but with the confidence up is worth including..
How to play it:. Verbil WIN.. Race 4 - 4:45PM ALL TOO HARD @ VINERY STUD HANDICAP (1100 METRES) 2..
Ellipsis looks well placed to go close after a more than handy first-up placing at Rosehill, she had to settle back and look to run on which she did into third behind Fierce.. Big turnaround in barrier fortunes and with the run under her belt she should settle closer.. That makes her hard to beat..
Dangers:. 3.. Scenic Point has now had two runs for Joe Pride and while she was run down in the second of those at Kensington it was still a nice performance and that was off a month's gap from her first-up run..
Back to the 1100m and could be harder to run down.. 5.. Shady Road had a mixed preparation earlier this year but did nab a stakes placing and was placed at Randwick before a spell..
Capable of running a nice race fresh.. 11.. Ballet D'Light found the fence in front and led all the way to a maiden win on debut at Rosehill two weeks ago..
Up in class into what looks a fairly deep race but couldn't leave her out.. How to play it:. Ellipsis WIN..
Race 5 - 5:20PM TOYOTA FORKLIFTS HANDICAP (1400 METRES) 6.. Love Story looks extremely promising and the form around her so far is holding up well.. Bumped into a subsequent stakes winner on debut then up to the 1400m coasted home at Kensington three weeks ago..
Runner-up there has won since.. Should find the front and while up in class she is tough to go past.. Dangers:.
4.. Chilli Margs has drawn right alongside the favourite so it'll be interesting to see if she rolls forward with her.. Settled back on resuming two weeks ago and surged late to grab third..
Fitter and the 1400m will suit, unbeaten second-up and has claims.. 3.. Reflect is fitter for two runs back and should also appreciate getting out in distance now..
No surprise to see her in the placings again.. 8.. Live was a handy third when resuming at Kensington but didn't get into the race from the second half of the field a month ago at Rosehill..
Entitled to another look here.. How to play it:. Love Story WIN..
Race 6 - 5:55PM TAB HANDICAP (1200 METRES) 4.. She's An Artist looks ready to win now back out of Group company in the Nivison where she was quite unlucky not to get even closer than three-quarters of a length in fifth.. Her two runs prior to that were suggestive a win is close and she has a good chance to break through..
Dangers:. 1.. Navy Pilot is very close to a win, both his runs back have been excellent, though he might well be wanting 1400m..
If this happens to be strongly run he'd be advantaged, worked home nicely behind Wanaruah at Randwick last time.. Each-way.. 6..
Hillier is an interesting runner resuming after a handy enough campaign that started with a win at Gosford back in May at BM78 level.. Runner-up in the Grafton Guineas prior to a break.. Can show up and will improve on it..
14.. Regimental Colours led and knocked up when resuming at Rosehill and could be a sharp improver here with that inside gate allowing a softer run.. Won three of five last prep so capable of lifting..
How to play it:. She's An Artist WIN.. Disclaimer:.
